When should you hire a locum?

Most chiropractors, and clinic owners in particular, tend to lack one thing: work-life balance.

We give so much of ourselves to our patients and to our practice. We're committed to providing the best chiropractic care possible and intent on doing everything so our business succeeds. Unfortunately, this often comes at a cost.

Physician burnout is a hot topic in the medical literature. Primary care physicians see 20-30 patients a day with only 15 minutes to perform a full history and physical. Hospitalists work 12-hour shifts for 2 weeks straight. If they're in an academic institution, they are required to perform research and/or teach on top of their clinic hours.

But medical physicians have something most chiropractors don't. They have an administration and Human Resources department which provides them with established paid time off and, oftentimes, an allowance for self-care.

The success of your practice depends on your wellbeing.

Chiropractors are a different breed. We enjoy the freedom from bureaucracy, but lack the employee benefits.

The success of your practice - both financially and clinically - depends on your wellbeing. Intentionally taking time off can help to decrease your risk of burnout and reset your perspective to allow for creative progress.
